EPISODE 17
CAMP COOKOUT
BUILDING A FIRE
Making a fire is a fairly simple process if you have the right materials and know the right technique.
The three main components to a successful fire are the starter, kindling, which are small, dry, easily ignitable pieces of wood, and the fuel, which is the actual wood used to keep a roaring fire going.
For a well burning campfire, use the following:
Matches
Newspaper
Kindling
Dry wood
Crumple the sheets of newspaper loosely and individually. Mound them in the fire area (fireplace, fire pit, etc
) Distribute the kindling above the paper. Set the firewood on top of it all. Light the paper in 2-3 places with a match or a lighter and start the process going. Once it's burning well, add more firewood, 2-3 pieces at a time going up in size and towards hardwood if you have it. Once a coal bed has been built, add the logs in a crisscross pattern and they will catch and burn nicely.
Continue to add wood to the fire as needed and it will burn all week if you want it to.
